CANCER DIET

The following tips are highlights from health plans that several doctors and nutritionists wrote for Patrick Scranton.

 Block Medical Center   (Evanston, Ill.)

My strict diet has helped me tolerate my treatment a lot better !

9/16/03 :  Seven months after being diagnosed, I visited Dr. Keith Block's Center in Evanston, Ill.   In conjunction with chemotherapy, Block offers a strict nutritional program with supplementation.  They also counsel in stress relief and physical fitness.  I've had several phone consultations with my nutritionist and doctor since my visit.

I immediately noticed a difference in the way I tolerated chemotherapy when I began the program.  I had a lot of nausea during my first seven rounds.  I could not eat or even take a sip of water for three of the days I was taking chemo. My eighth through tenth rounds got progressively easier to tolerate and I was able to eat something every day of chemo.

My Block diet :  Grains are almost half of what you eat.  Vegetables and protein (beans, soy products, certain fish) should make up most of the other half.  Eat some fats (nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil)  Eat a small amount of fruit.  Drink green tea.  Block ranks food items within each group by how healthy they are so you know what to concentrate on.

Foods to avoid :  Sugar, dairy products, beef, smoked fish, chicken, soft drinks, tap water, caffeinated items, alcohol

Recommended supplements (Block's own brand) :  Nutri-Essentials Plus, Opti-Cell Plus, Ultra Reishi, Arctic Essentials.  Generic coenzyme Q10 and melatonin were also suggested.

Dr. Block Smoothie : 2 cups soy milk, 3 scoops Whey Berry & Flax,  1/2 scoop Immuno Pro, (optional- 1/2 tablespoon cod liver oil, 2 teaspoons Liquid Borage)  Shake, don't blend.   (635 calories and 53 grams of protein, including optional items.  487 calories without the optional items.)  Drink twice per day to ensure an adequate protein intake or to gain weight.

3/5/04 :  Dr. L. (ND, CCN, HHP: Doctor of Naturopath, Certified Clinical Nutritionist and Holistic Health Practitioner) suggested a five day gallbladder & liver flush and colon cleanse.  The first two photos show the largest stones from my flush.  Photo on right is a close-up of my largest stone.  I had hundreds of smaller stone fragments.

Diet:    Food combining  is stressed for proper digestion.  For breakfast, eat only fruit.  Salads and vegetables are important.  Free range organic chicken, certain cold water fish, organic range fed red meat and wild game are fine on occasion.  One organic egg per day is fine.  Ezekial bread is fine. Drink distilled water with some organic apple cider vinegar added for minerals.  Juice your own vegetables and immediately drink them.  Snack on nuts.

Foods to avoid :  Sugar, alcohol, caffeine, soft drinks, tap water, chocolate, mayonnaise, mustard, catsup, white vinegar, shell fish, dairy products, smoked or cured meats, peanuts, popcorn, white flour, over the counter drugs, artificial sweeteners and flavoring, MSG , canned vegetables, iceberg lettuce, processed or packaged food, fried food.  Don't eat too many grains.

Recommended supplements:  Poly-MVA, Essiac Tea, Zymitol, Serraflazyme, Coenzyme Q10, Oregano Oil, Living Multi OM vitamins, Vitamin E, Calcium Orotate, MegaHydrin, Perfect Food, Primal Defense Probiotic, and Oxy-Powder colon cleanser.

Avoid :   Fluoride tooth paste, aluminum based deodorant, using a microwave oven

Other recommendations :  Practice stress relief techniques like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing.  Exercise to obtain lymphatic drainage. Centre For Natural Healing - Jonathan Treasure : MNIMH, (RH)AHG, MCPP, Medical Herbalist

8/11/04 : Phone consultation with Donald Yance's company, CNH.  He also owns Natura Health Products.  I discussed my fairly strict diet that I've been on and Mr. Treasure suggested that I cut down on the amount of grains and legumes that I eat because they turn to sugar.  He said that whey protein is good and mentioned that I could stand to eat a little more protein and good fats, like avocado, cocoanut milk, hormone-free lamb and organic eggs.  Fermented organic whole fat live yogurt, as well as nuts, were good also.

Recommended supplements:  CNH recommended a daily smoothie of PaleoMeal protein powder, Beyond Whey, Beyond Essential Fats, and a few other items mixed with goat milk, coconut milk, or unsweetened soy milk.

Other suggestions were Natura products Immucare 1 powder (to restore white blood cells), Botanical Treasures powder (antiangiogenic & anti-inflammatory), and Vital Adapt liquid.  Immune Builder Mushroom Combination Formula, Artemisinin & A Annua protocol, Vitamin C/K3 protocol, CoQ10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and a few other items. Get a weekly IV dose of vitamin C.   A special mix herb formula : 40 ml of each of baical skullcap, trifolium flos, milk thistle, St. John's Wort, arctium seed, and 20 ml each of licorice root and poke root.

Other recommendations : Run a resistance & sensitivity test on my tumors to see what may or may not kill them.  See Dr. Larry Weisenthal at http://www.weisenthal.org/ .
