Patrick Scranton (Houston, Texas)

DSRCT Diagnosed 2/03 at age 40 - Passed Away 05/05/05

Timeline

01/21/03  Lump appeared in my groin
 02/12/03  Surgery to remove lump
03 -11/03  Chemo rounds #1 - 10        Adriamycin (Doxorubicin) & Ifosfamide (Ifex) for four days
01/12/04  Chemo #11                           Gemcitabine (Gemzar) for one day

07/29/04  My 7/15 CT scan showed that everything was stable, except for some tumor growth in my perirectal area.  After eight months with no chemo and four CT scans, I've only seen slow growth of all of my tumors.
 08/02/04  I began a Phase I clinical trial for AMG 706 (AMG706) at MDACC.     (125 mg / day)
09/21/04  CT Scan showed three tumor areas were stable.  The mass in my perirectal area had grown about 20%.  Overall, tumor growth was measured at a 5% increase. Continue AMG 706.
12/28/04  Stopped taking AMG 706.    Tumor growth noted.
03/05  Tumor growth.  Spots on liver
03/15/05  "Precision Radiation" - IMRT & SBRT combo.    11 treatments:  8 IMRT sessions on pelvis area and 3 SBRT sessions on liver.       (Dr. Fuss at the CTRC in San Antonio, Texas)

Chemotherapy Notes

Neulasta shot given to boost white blood cell counts.  Aranesp shot given to boost red blood cell counts.

Emend tablets worked very well to prevent nausea.  Marinol tablets only made me more nauseous.

Senokot-S worked well to prevent constipation during chemo.

Carafate & Xyloxylin prescription mouth rinses helped relieve mouth sores and irritation.

Biotene over-the-counter mouthwash worked well to keep my mouth in good shape during chemo.

Surgery / Radiation Notes

Three cancer centers have told me that they would not perform Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy (IPHC) surgery on me due to the poor results from previous DSRCT patients that they have operated on.  It is a brutal procedure and it seems that the tumors come back anyway.  M.D. Anderson was pushing for this surgery on me in 9/03.

As a debulking option, I had a "precision radiation" combo of IMRT and SBRT done in March 2005 by Dr. Martin Fuss at the CTRC in San Antonio, Texas.  It is a shame that no one suggested this earlier.  I should have done this a year earlier when my tumors were much smaller and there were less of them.

CT Scan Notes

For CT scans, I find that Gastroview is much easier to swallow and does not constipate like barium.  You have to request it, because it costs the hospital a little more money.

To help remove some radiation out of my body after a CT Scan, I was told to use Potassium Iodide drops. Put 4 drops in water, 3 times per day for five days.  Then back off to 4 drops in water, 2 times per day for 10 days.

To detoxify my liver after a scan, I was told to use S.O.D. Lozenges - 1 pill, 3 times per day, for 3 days.
